About the role
A unique opportunity to join the Department of Parliamentary Services (DPS) in a newly created role of General Counsel.

As General Counsel for DPS you will provide authoritative in-house legal advice and consultancy to the Secretary, Executive, Parliament's Presiding Officers and senior managers on a range of areas to support the delivery of services to the Parliament of Victoria.

In this broad, dynamic, and diverse role you will be responsible for legal and internal governance matters for the Department, ensure operational policies are best practice and lead the development and implementation of a Legal Services Policy.

This is an ongoing, full time PoV Grade 7 role ($173,134 - $235,465) commensurate with experience.

About you
You are energised by the prospect of delivering legal services within a boutique department, have the ability to ‘get up to speed' quickly on unfamiliar topics and lead the development of solutions to support the delivery of services to the Parliament of Victoria.

The successful candidate will be looking to join a small high performing team where they can make a difference.
You will have:

  • Demonstrated experience providing in-house legal services and advice in a public sector environment with a commercial mindset.
  • Experience managing corporate compliance, policy development, internal governance, contractual and legal issues in a highly visible public environment
  • High level analytical, negotiation, conceptual, communication, diplomacy and stakeholder management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a demanding, highly confidential and time pressured environment and evidence of a collaborative and inclusive approach to contribute as a member of a high functioning leadership team, model organisational values whilst being self-directed to manage multiple and competing priorities.
  • An Australian lawyer admitted or eligible to be admitted to the Supreme Court of Victoria, with a valid or eligible to obtain a Practising Certificate.
